This paper provides a short history of the circumstances and motivational
factors regarding the restoration of Orson Welles’ ‘Chimes at Midnight’. The paper includes
a brief history of the film’s picture and sound degradation and the pursuit of superior
first-generation elements. It then goes on to discuss how the latest software systems were
employed in the restoration process.
